Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — More than 6,300 bags of Lay’s potato chips have been recalled from store shelves in the United States due to a serious health risk that could potentially be fatal.
According to a report by Fortune, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) escalated the recall to a Class I risk level, which is the highest level. This classification indicates that the FDA sees a “reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to the violating product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
The potato chips was originally recalled last month in December. Lay’s potato chips was recalled after it was discovered that the chips contained undeclared milk, which could trigger allergic reactions in some consumers. The recall was issued as milk is one of the FDA’s eight “major food allergens.”
A milk allergy differs from lactose intolerance, which affects digestion. Those with a milk allergy can experience severe reactions, including hives, swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat, difficulty breathing, vomiting, and more. In extreme cases, it can cause anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition that impairs breathing.
However, no allergic illnesses related to the recalled product have been reported so far.
Lay’s Recall Details
The recall is limited to certain Lay’s Classic Potato Chips sold in Washington and Oregon, distributed starting in November. The affected products come in 13-ounce bags with a “Guaranteed Fresh” date of February 11, 2025. No other Lay’s products, flavors, sizes, or variety packs are involved in the recall.
Lay’s, owned by PepsiCo, is urging customers who may have purchased the recalled chips to dispose of them immediately.
