Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel –– The city of Marseille, France, is grappling with a disturbing trend of youth violence linked to drug-related crimes. Recent incidents have highlighted a grim reality where teenagers are not only victims but also perpetrators of violent acts, raising alarms among law enforcement and community leaders.

In a shocking series of events, a teenager armed with a weapon was attacked by rival gang members before he could execute his planned assault.

Reports indicate that the youth was repeatedly stabbed and then set on fire, according to statements from the prosecutor’s office, as reported by Al Jazeera.

This incident underscores the brutal environment in which these young individuals find themselves, often caught in cycles of violence.

Following the initial attack, the same detainee from Luynes prison sought to recruit another underage accomplice, a 14-year-old boy, to carry out a retaliatory killing against a rival gang member.

The detainee promised the young recruit a substantial reward of 50,000 euros (approximately IDR 849 million) for his involvement. This alarming recruitment of minors for violent crimes raises serious questions about the influence of gangs and the vulnerability of youth in these environments.

Once tasked with the mission, the young assassin, accompanied by another individual, took a taxi to the designated location for the revenge attack. When the unnamed 36-year-old taxi driver refused to wait for them, the situation escalated dramatically.

Enraged, the teenage assailant shot the driver dead using a Magnum 357 revolver before fleeing the scene, as detailed by the newspaper Le Monde. The identities of both the suspect and the victim have not been disclosed by the authorities.

These recent violent incidents contribute to a chilling statistic: 17 drug-related murders have been reported in Marseille this year alone, with a total of 49 deaths linked to drug violence throughout 2023. This spike in youth involvement in gang-related activities is particularly concerning for local officials.

Prosecutor Bessone noted that both victims and perpetrators of recent violence in the city are becoming increasingly younger, highlighting the urgent need for community intervention and support systems to address the underlying issues fueling this trend.

As Marseille continues to confront this epidemic of violence, it becomes clear that addressing the root causes, including socioeconomic factors and gang influence, is essential to safeguarding the future of its youth and restoring peace to the community.
