Jakarta, IndonesiaSentinel.com — Apple’s latest iPhone 16 series has hit a snag in China, with the new smartphones failing to capture the enthusiasm of Chinese consumers. The key issue? The absence of artificial intelligence (AI) features, which has left many in the Chinese market disappointed.
This setback comes at a critical time for Apple, as it faces intensified competition from Huawei Technologies, which continues to solidify its dominance in the world’s largest smartphone market.
As reported by Reuters on September 10, 2024, the missing ‘Apple Intelligence’ AI feature has become a focal point of dissatisfaction among Chinese consumers. The lack of this anticipated feature has exacerbated a slowdown in iPhone sales and raised questions about the device’s value proposition.
The iPhone 16 launch has sparked significant chatter on Weibo, China’s popular social media platform. Notably, three out of the top ten trending topics are related to the iPhone 16, with the hashtag “iPhone 16 in China lacks AI” accumulating 11.33 million views and over 1,500 comments.
One user on Weibo remarked, “What’s the point of buying the iPhone 16 if it doesn’t come with AI?” Another user suggested, “Without AI as a major feature, the price should be cut in half.”
In contrast, Huawei’s latest offerings are gaining traction. The Chinese tech giant is focusing on expanding its market share, and its new foldable phones are particularly popular. This shift has helped Huawei surpass Apple as the third-largest smartphone vendor in China in recent quarters.
Another Weibo user expressed their preference for Huawei’s new technology, stating, “Whether the iPhone 16 includes AI or not doesn’t concern me—I’ll be opting for Huawei’s latest foldable phone.”

Apple has yet to announce any partnerships in China to support the iPhone 16’s AI capabilities. The ‘Apple Intelligence’ feature is expected to be introduced in Mandarin next year, but its current absence has clearly impacted the device’s reception in China.
