Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Garuda Indonesia has been named one of the world’s top 25 airlines for 2025 by aviation safety and product rating website AirlineRatings.
According to its website, AirlineRatings evaluates airlines based on traveler feedback and expert reviews. Factors considered include passenger comfort, product consistency, and innovation. Safety and financial stability are also key determinants.
Sharon Peterson, CEO of AirlineRatings, stated that this year’s review placed “special emphasis” on the economy class experience, as it is where most passengers travel.
“We consistently receive feedback about the lack of space in economy class, so it was only fitting to make this a key factor in selecting this year’s award winners,” Sharon said, as reported by CNN Indonesia.
Top Ranks
South Korea’s Korean Air secured the top spot on the list, with Garuda Indonesia ranking 25th. According to AirlineRatings, Korean Air was recognized primarily for its “commitment to passenger comfort,” particularly by offering the most spacious economy class seating among all airlines globally, alongside Japan Airlines.
The South Korean flag carrier dethroned last year’s winner, Qatar Airways, which dropped to second place. The third and fourth spots for 2025 were claimed by Air New Zealand and Cathay Pacific, respectively.
Singapore Airlines (SIA) made a significant jump into the top 10 this year, securing fifth place after ranking 12th last year.
A key factor contributing to Korean Air’s leading position appears to be its generous legroom. Sharon noted that while many airlines have added a tenth seat per row on their Boeing 777 aircraft and reduced economy seat pitch to 31-32 inches (from the previous 32-33 inches), Korean Air has resisted this trend.
“Korean Air has maintained its original seating configuration and a spacious 33-34 inch seat pitch, providing passengers with a more comfortable experience,” she added.
