Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Indonesia tourism sector is experiencing significant growth, with foreign tourist arrivals from January to November 2024, reaching a total of 12.66 million foreign visitors.
According to data from Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the figures marking a 20.17% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This achievement sets a new record for Indonesia’s tourism sector over the past five years.
In 2020, international arrivals plummeted to just 3.8 million due to the pandemic, followed by a low of 1.3 million in 2021. However, the country rebounded with 5.9 million visitors in 2022, nearly doubling to 10.5 million in 2023, and achieving 12.66 million in 2024.
The data was confirmed through official announcements on the Instagram accounts of @kemenpar.ri, Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.
Visitors from Malaysia accounted for the largest share at 16%, followed by Australia (11.9%), Singapore (11%), China (7.8%), and Timor-Leste (6.9%).
Collaborative Efforts
Earlier, Ni Made Ayu Marthini, Acting Deputy for Marketing at the Ministry of Tourism, praised the milestone during a statement on Saturday, January 4.
“This achievement must be appreciated as the result of collective efforts by the Ministry of Tourism and various stakeholders in promoting a high-quality and sustainable tourism sector that provides broad benefits for communities,” Marthini stated, as reported by CNN Indonesia.
Expectations for Year-End Boost
Tourism officials expect the final tally for 2024 to grow further with December figures, which will be officially reported by BPS in February 2025.
“We are still awaiting the performance data for December 2024, which will be announced by BPS next month,” Marthini added.

The Ministry also hopes the Christmas and New Year holiday season (Nataru) will significantly contribute to the 2024 tourism target, according to the Ministry’s official website.
The record-breaking performance underscores Indonesia’s successful recovery and growth in the tourism sector, which has been bolstered by international marketing campaigns and efforts to ensure sustainability.
