Indonesian Police to Increased Patrols, Prevent Tourists Extortion During Holidays

Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has called on military and police personnel to intensify patrols during the 2025 Christmas and New Year holiday season. The initiative aims to prevent incidents such as extortion and others criminal activity happen to tourists during the holiday period.

“I have requested increased patrols, especially during peak traffic periods, as reports have indicated potential incidents of extortion,” General Sigit said while inspecting the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road at Kilometer 57 in Karawang, West Java, on Friday, December 27, as reported by Detik.

He emphasized the need for coordinated patrols involving the military, police, and relevant stakeholders to ensure public safety.

The call for increased security measures comes after recent incidents of extortion and physical assault on tourists traveling to the Puncak area in West Java. Several suspects have been arrested in connection with these cases.

General Sigit expressed his determination to prevent such incidents from recurring. “In West Java, there are certain areas that require special attention, such as Pangandaran and Puncak, where viral incidents involving illegal toll collectors and extortion on alternative routes have occurred. These must be anticipated to prevent repetition,” he stated.

He urged military and police personnel, along with other stakeholders, to maintain strong coordination and solidarity in ensuring public safety throughout the holiday season.

“We must ensure that people traveling to popular tourist destinations in West Java are well served and their safety is guaranteed,” he said.

General Sigit also highlighted the potential surge in visitors to tourist spots and increased return traffic after the New Year celebrations. He called on security personnel to anticipate congestion, accidents, and criminal incidents.

“Joint patrols by the military and police are essential, especially during peak traffic hours, when people often resort to using alternative routes. These areas must be monitored closely to prevent criminal activities,” he added.

Therefore, Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has emphasized the importance of maintaining heightened security and vigilance during the holiday season.

“Any criminal incidents would undermine the success of the holiday security operations. I urge all personnel to maintain vigilance until the end of the holiday season, as the post-New Year period will see increased activity in tourist areas, churches, and return traffic flows,” General Sigit concluded.

With increased patrols, collaboration between TNI, Polri, and stakeholders, and proactive measures against potential criminal activities, such as tourists extortion. Authorities aim to ensure a safe and smooth experience for holiday travelers and tourists.

As millions of people celebrate Christmas and New Year, these efforts are crucial in maintaining public trust and security across popular destinations in Indonesia
