Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — For the first time in three years, Xiaomi has overtaken Apple to become the second-best selling smartphone brand worldwide in August 2024, according to Counterpoint Research. Samsung remains the leading smartphone brand.
As reported by Gadget360 on Friday (Sept 20, 2024), Xiaomi’s success can be attributed to the strong demand for budget smartphones, particularly the Redmi 13 and Redmi Note 13 5G, both priced under $200.
These models helped Xiaomi gain market share in key regions such as India, Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.
Despite Xiaomi’s shipments remaining steady in August, Counterpoint’s report highlights that Apple’s seasonal shipment decline, ahead of the iPhone 16 launch, provided an opening for Xiaomi.

However, the release of the iPhone 16 series is expected to boost Apple’s sales and possibly reclaim its second-place ranking.
Xiaomi’s global smartphone sales grew by 22% in the first half of 2024. While the growth rate is projected to slow in the second half, the company is still expected to achieve double-digit growth for the full year.
