Sulawesi Records Highest Economic Growth in first Quarter 2025, Outpace Java

Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Indonesia’s Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Sulawesi recorded the highest regional economic growth in the first quarter of 2025, outpacing other islands across the archipelago.

According to official data released by BPS, Indonesia’s economy grew by 4.87% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025 nationally. The growth during the January–March period, was measured based on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)figures.

BPS Chief Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said the GDP at current prices stood at Rp5,665.9 trillion (approximately $356 billion), while GDP at constant prices reached Rp3,264.5 trillion.

“Sulawesi’s economy grew by 6.40 percent, the highest among all regions,” said Amalia during a press briefing in Central Jakarta on Monday (May 5).

The growth marked a slight improvement from the 6.34 percent increase recorded in the same quarter of 2024. With that figures, Sulawesi’s contribution to the national GDP at current prices reached 6.95 percent in the first quarter of this year.

Amalia, said the region’s growth was driven primarily by agriculture, forestry and fisheries sector, manufacturing industry, and trade.

Meanwhile Java, Indonesia’s most populous island and economic hub grew by 4.99 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025. The growth also seen an improvement compared to the 4.84 percent growth recorded in the same period last year.

While the growth rate in Java lagged behind Sulawesi’s 6.40 percent, the Java island remained the highest contributor to the national economy.

“Java accounted for 57.43 percent of Indonesia’s total GDP,” said Amalia.

Java’s economic expansion was largely driven by agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, alongside robust performances in the trade and information and communication sectors.

She noted that both Java and Sulawesi posted growth above the national average of 4.87 percent in the January–March period. “Both Java and Sulawesi posted growth above the national average,” Amalia said.

According to BPS, here is the breakdown of Q1 2025 regional economic growth and their contributions to national GDP:

  1. Sulawesi: 6.40% growth (6.95% of national GDP)
  2. Java: 4.99% growth (57.43% of national GDP)
  3. Sumatra: 4.85% growth (22.14% of national GDP)
  4. Kalimantan: 4.32% growth (8.15% of national GDP)
  5. Bali and Nusa Tenggara: 3.12% growth (2.71% of national GDP)
  6. Maluku and Papua: 1.69% growth (2.62% of national GDP)
