Bandung, IndonesiaSentinel.com — Attending live music concerts has surged in popularity among Generation Z in Indonesia, evolving from a leisure activity into what some now jokingly refer to as a “necessity.” A viral expression has taken root on social media saying “Kebutuhan Manusia termasuk Primer, Sekunder, Tersier, dan Konser (Human needs include primary, secondary, tertiary… and concert).” Highlighting that for many young Indonesians, going to concerts has become an important part to their lifestyle.

In the last year, Indonesia has witnessed a significant boom in concert events, with some of the world’s biggest artists performing for sold-out crowds. For Generation Z, these events represent more than just entertainment. They are a cultural experience, a way to connect with peers, and an opportunity to share moments on social media as an essential element of their online presence.

The shift towards concert-going as an “essential” activity highlights how Generation Z is reshaping the concept of consumer needs. Traditionally, human needs are categorized into three tiers: primary (basic necessities such as food, water, and shelter), secondary (healthcare, education), and tertiary (luxuries like vacations and high-end products). However, for many Indonesian Gen Z-ers, music concerts are increasingly considered a must-have experience.

Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter) have amplified the trend. With the rise of influencers and content creators, attending concerts has become an important social currency. Posting photos, videos, and stories from concerts is now a key aspect of staying relevant and connected in digital communities.

International Music Concert in Indonesia

In the past year, Indonesia has hosted several major international and local music events, attracting tens of thousands of fans. From K-pop to pop-rock, the concert landscape has been diverse, catering to a wide array of musical tastes.

Some of the most significant concerts in Indonesia over the last year include:

Blackpink (BORN PINK World Tour) – Held at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, this K-pop powerhouse drew more than 70,000 fans across two days in March 2023.

Coldplay (Music of the Spheres World Tour) – This highly anticipated concert, also held at Gelora Bung Karno in November 2023, attracted over 80,000 fans, marking the British band’s first-ever show in Indonesia.

BTS’s Suga (D-DAY TOUR) – The solo tour of BTS member Suga made waves in Jakarta, drawing around 35,000 attendees in May 2023.

Upcoming Bruno Mars and Maroon 5 Concerts

As 2024 unfolds, the excitement among Generation Z continues to build for two major upcoming concerts which is Bruno Mars and Maroon 5.

Bruno Mars, known for his high-energy performances and chart-topping hits, is set to perform in Jakarta in September 2024. Tickets for his show sold out within minutes of going on sale, demonstrating the immense demand among young fans. Many in Indonesia’s Gen Z see this as a once-in-a-lifetime event, with social media buzzing about preparations for the concert, from outfit choices to travel plans.

Economic Impact of Bruno Mars Concert 2024 in Indonesia

Similarly, Maroon 5, who will perform later in 2025, is generating significant excitement. With their long history of producing radio-friendly hits and their enduring popularity, Maroon 5 has struck a chord with a wide demographic, including Generation Z in Indoneisa. Fans are eagerly counting down the days to the concert.

These concerts have further hype the trend of live music events as an essential part of young Indonesians’ social lives. For Gen Z, attending these performances has become more than just entertainment, it’s a must-do experience, comparable to securing the latest tech gadgets or fashion trends.

Impact of Music Concert Trends in Indonesia

The rise of concerts as a social necessity has also been a boon for Indonesia’s entertainment industry. Concerts boost local economies, from ticket sales and merchandise to the hospitality and tourism sectors. For Generation Z, the concert experience often extends beyond the performance itself, it includes travel, accommodations, and the social activities surrounding the event.

In a post-pandemic world, where virtual experiences once dominated, Generation Z in Indonesia is now placing high value on in-person events. Live concerts offer a unique space for self-expression, community-building, and escapism—needs that this generation feels are just as essential as their more traditional counterparts.
