Jayapura – President Joko Widodo officially opened the Papua Street Carnival, at the Papua Governor’s Office Area, Jayapura City, Papua on Friday (7/7/2023).
“By invoking the blessings and grace of God Almighty, this morning I officially declare the Papua Street Carnival opened and started,” the President was quoted as saying in a press release by BPMI Setpres.
The Papua Street Carnival event is a collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) and the Papua Youth Creative Hub (PYCH) which was inaugurated by the Head of State in March 2023.
The President believes the existence of the creative hub will give a big leap to the creative economy sector in Papua.
“Seeing its development [PYCH], it was shown to me earlier. I believe that young Papuans will make a big leap,” the President said.
The big leap, continued Jokowi, can be seen in a variety of typical Papuan products on display at the Papua Street Carnival. The President assessed that the product has a very good packaging design.
“Please enter the exhibition location and see for yourself how the packaging of Papuan products, be it coffee, smoked fish, and other products related to fashion designers, is really very visible. Very good designs packed in packaging, in packaging whose brand is very well designed,” the President said.
In addition to creative products, the President said, young Papuans have also been able to produce technology products such as cell phones and laptops.
The Papua Street Carnival also presents a carnival fashion parade inspired by the typical flora and fauna of Papua.
“Earlier it was conveyed by the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, producing cellphones, producing laptops, this is done not in western Indonesia but in eastern Indonesia in the Land of Papua. A leap,” the Head of State concluded.
