Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Bobby Nasution, the son-in-law of Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has launched his campaign for the 2024 North Sumatra gubernatorial election, sparking discussions about “dynasty politics” in Indonesia.
During a recent campaign stop in Batang Angkola, Tapanuli Selatan, Bobby surprised the audience by introducing himself as the son-in-law of “Mulyono,” Jokowi’s lesser-known childhood name, instead of highlighting his more well-known connection to the president.
Accompanied by his wife, Kahiyang Ayu—President Jokowi’s daughter—Bobby used the familial connection in a light-hearted yet strategic manner, subtly signaling his ties to Indonesia’s most powerful political figure.
“This is Kahiyang Ayu Siregar, my wife, and many now refer to us as the children and in-laws of Mulyono,” Bobby said, referring to his father-in-law.
The casual mention of Jokowi’s name in this context highlights the growing prominence of family ties in Indonesian politics, a practice that has drawn criticism for promoting political dynasties.
While Bobby and Kahiyang have previously been involved in regional politics, this gubernatorial race represents a significant step into the national political arena. Bobby, who is married to Kahiyang Ayu, seeks to follow in the footsteps of other influential political families in Southeast Asia, where dynastic politics has played a defining role in shaping leadership.
In her remarks, Kahiyang, after some hesitation, also called for support from the local community. “I am the wife of the number 1 candidate for Governor of North Sumatra, Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution. We ask for your prayers and support to hopefully win the trust of the people to serve as governor,” she said.

Bobby’s campaign emphasizes the delicate balance of dynasty politics in Indonesia, as he navigates both his professional aspirations and the legacy of his powerful family connections.
