Jakarta – Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani revealed the importance of cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia in the maritime sector, especially in illegal fishing efforts and delimitation of maritime and land boundaries.

“I support efforts to finalize the agreement on Maritime delimitation in the Sulawesi Sea and Malacca Strait segments. I will also ensure that the House of Representatives, through its supervisory function, will continue to monitor the progress of these instruments,” Puan said after a bilateral meeting with the Speaker of the Malaysian People’s Council, Tan Sri Dato’ Johari Bin Abdul at the Parliament Building, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Monday (2/10/2023).

On that occasion, Puan also encouraged cooperation between the Parliaments of the two countries. So that it can play a role in advancing relations between Indonesia and Malaysia.

The closeness and strong relationship between the two Parliaments itself is shown by the frequent exchange of dialog in various parliamentary forums, such as the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) and also the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA).

Regarding the resolution at the 44th AIPA General Assembly held in Jakarta some time ago, Puan invited the Malaysian Parliament to jointly fight for the resolution of the crisis in Myanmar in line with what had been agreed by the Southeast Asian Parliamentary forum.

“I believe if the cooperation between the parliaments of both countries is strong, we can help the governments to solve the various challenges faced by both countries. This includes through the 45th AIPA General Assembly in 2024 in Laos. Regional Peace and Security is our shared responsibility,” she said as reported by DPR RI.

Puan also mentioned the role of Indonesia and Malaysia as fellow founders of ASEAN. She emphasized the importance of Indonesia’s relationship with Malaysia as an anchor in creating peace and security stability in the region.

For this reason, Puan hopes that the two countries can manage various problems faced through bilateral mechanisms and forums. Although sometimes there are problems in bilateral relations, Indonesia and Malaysia are able to manage various problems that arise through various bilateral mechanisms.

“I hope that in the future the relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia will continue to strengthen based on the spirit of mutual respect,” she concluded. (InfoPublik)
