Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — A man claiming to be a member of the Indonesian Army (TNI) went viral on social media after brandishing a firearm and firing a shot during an altercation on Kemang Raya, Mampang, South Jakarta.
In the circulated footage, the individual identified himself as a soldier from the Strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad). Allegedly, he threatened a woman while holding what appeared to be a firearm.
Incident Details
According to local law enforcement, the altercation began when the man became frustrated with a parking attendant near a busy café in Kemang. The suspect reportedly drew the firearm, causing alarm among bystanders.
“He seemed irritated, perhaps due to congestion caused by the café’s patrons dispersing. He then displayed what is suspected to be a firearm. We are still verifying whether it was an actual weapon,” said AKP Iwan, Head of Criminal Investigation at Mampang Police Precinct, on Saturday, January 18, 2025.
Witnesses claim the man fired a single shot into the air during the argument.
“We’ve heard reports of one shot fired, but there are no confirmed injuries or physical assaults stemming from this incident,” Iwan added.
TNI Denial
Following the incident, the Indonesian Army quickly clarified that the individual was not affiliated with its ranks, particularly the Kostrad unit he claimed to represent.
“After verification, we can confirm that he is not a Kostrad member,” stated Colonel Hendhi Yustian Danang Suta, Head of Public Relations for Kostrad, on Sunday, January 19, 2025.
